It certainly is strange to put in a female* name and get treated like a man, though. It would be interesting to see this structure applied to LGBTQ relationships, but maybe that could be part of what defines Emily is Away Three in the future. Stories are meant to have a clear focus, though, and not be a catch-all for everyone at all times. there is no option to play as a female.* That isn’t the biggest issue for me, but it might turn some people off. You can play the closest version of yourself or who you may have wanted to be with the game disregarding gender boundaries, which is why I took issue with the following in Glagowski’s review. The immersion continues as you revert to being a teen again, but the possibilities are more varied than what may have been possible at that age. I won’t lie that I didn’t go down the YouToob rabbit hole and watch the Evolution of Dance, having flashbacks to the first YouTube video I ever saw.

The game immerses you within its reality with old Windows XP backgrounds taking over your desktop, the game’s chat client being just another open program among your many dozens, and by clicking links to “YouToob” and “Facenook” that show up in your browser. Sometimes you choose what you want to say, and the protagonist deletes what you were typing and writes something less vulnerable, more casual and “cool.” You can lie to create and preserve friendships because who wants to be your friend if you don’t like the same kinds of music and movies, right? The fickleness of teenage relationships are accentuated in the climax when you realize sometimes, no matter what you do, you just can’t be there for everyone. Seeley’s writing captures teenage insecurity thoroughly with that constant voice in your head that debates whether you should hit send. Your relationships grow closer and further apart as you get to know them by sharing music, discussing life plans, and helping them through crises.
You talk to two girls over the year, Evelyn and Emily. You choose your icon, populate your profile with your favorite Arctic Monkeys lyrics and V for Vendetta quotes, and choose your text and background colors to show everyone how xXxCool_You_ArexXx.

You get to go through all the steps of cultivating your online persona, back when that may have been the only thing you had full control over. The game takes place over five chapters, from the summer before your last year of high school to the summer after it, each chapter a passing season. Įmily Is Away Too is a visual novel by Kyle Seeley that transports you back to the mid-2000s and takes place entirely on what is clearly meant to be AIM. That craving for intimacy and general unease is rekindled when I play Emily Is Away Too. AIM often felt like a liminal space to me the longer and later I was online, like reality was slightly off-kilter. It would start off casual and as the evening progressed, we’d move to discussing existential questions and telling each other things we’d be too scared to say face to face. I’d hear the beeps and whistles from the modem while signing on and the familiar sounds of messaging someone.
I remember being in middle and high school, staying up for hours upon hours talking to my closest friends on AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) in the computer room. I was inspired to write this in response to Peter Glagowski’s review of Emily Is Away Too.

I’ve never written a review in my life, unless you count when I was on the school newspaper in middle school for a year and wrote restaurant and movie reviews (I honestly can’t remember what I wrote and would love to be able to see it now but those writings are lost to the annals of time), so don’t judge too hard.
